St. John, the son of Zebedee, and the brother of St. James the Great, was called to be an Apostle by our Lord in the first year of His public ministry. He became the "beloved disciple" and the only one of the Twelve who did not forsake the Savior in the hour of His Passion. He stood faithfully at the cross when the Savior made him the guardian of His Mother. His later life was passed chiefly in Jerusalem and at Ephesus. He founded many churches in Asia Minor. He wrote the fourth Gospel, and three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation is also attributed to him. Brought to Rome, tradition relates that he was by order of Emperor Dometian cast into a cauldron of boiling oil but came forth unhurt and was banished to the island of Pathmos for a year. He lived to an extreme old age, surviving all his fellow apostles, and died at Ephesus about the year 100.
St. John is called the Apostle of Charity, a virtue he had learned from his Divine Master, and which he constantly inculcated by word and example. The "beloved disciple" died at Ephesus, where a stately church was erected over his tomb. It was afterwards converted into a Mohammedan mosque.
John is credited with the authorship of three epistles and one Gospel, although many scholars believe that the final editing of the Gospel was done by others shortly after his death. He is also supposed by many to be the author of the book of Revelation, also called the Apocalypse, although this identification is less certain.
O Glorious, Apostle and Evangelist St. John, you who were illumined by an abundance of supernatural light, to you was revealed the most sublime truths of heaven. To you was pre-announced the combat the church was to obtain over every type of enemy. Obtain for us we pray, St. John holy and pure, the grace to always live in the faith of the church, the universe mother of the true children of God and to live a life that serves to increase the glory of God, the love of Jesus and the good of all people. Saint John, whom I have chosen as my special patron, pray for me that I, too, may one day glorify the Blessed Trinity in heaven. Obtain for me your lively faith, that I may consider all persons, things, and events in the light of almighty God. Pray, that I may be generous in making sacrifices of temporal things to promote my eternal interests, as you so wisely did.
Set me on fire with a love for Jesus, that I may thirst for His sacraments and burn with zeal for the spread of His kingdom. By your powerful intercession, help me in the performance of my duties to God, myself and all the world.
Win for me the virtue of purity and a great confidence in the Blessed Virgin. Protect me this day, and every day of my life. Keep me from mortal sin. Obtain for me the grace of a happy death. Amen

Sa iyo naipahayag ang pakikidigma ng Simbahan ng Diyos laban sa lahat ng uri ng kaaway. San Juan, apostol at ebanghelista, ikaw na aming pinili bilang katangi-tanging huwaran at patron, ipanalangin mo kami, upang kami ma’y makasama mo sa pagluwalhati sa Banal na Santatlo sa kaharian ng langit. Biyayaan mo kami ng masiglang pananampalataya, upang makilala namin ang lahat ng mga tao, bagay at pangyayari sa aming buhay, bilang mga handog mula sa Diyos. Ipanalangin mo kami, upang kami’y kusang-loob na makapag-alay ng banal na sakripisyo sa pamamagitan ng pagtalikod sa mga maka-mundong bagay at pag-nanasa, alang-alang sa walang hanggang katiwasayan ng aming buhay Kristyano, tulad ng iyong mga ginawa sa lupa.
